FEU, UST booters force rubber matches in UAAP finals
Feb 26th
The men’s and women’s teams of Far Eastern University and University of Santo Tomas forced do-or-die matches after beating separate foes in their respective finals series in the 72nd UAAP football tournament held at the Erenchun and Ocampo fields inside the Ateneo campus in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
The FEU Tamaraws leaned on Jason Cordova’s lone goal to eke out a 1-0 win over the UST Tigers in the men’s division while women’s defending champions Tigresses trounced top seed La Salle Lady Archers, 2-0
Cordova scored in the 22nd minute after receiving a long pass from Noel Espinosa a lead that they protected up to the final whistle.
Tams coach Rodolfo Alicante said defense was the key in their victory. "We knew that they (UST) are strong in long balls and crosses so we tried to prevent them from doing it," said Alicante, who guided FEU to its last crown in 2008.
But the Tams’ hopes of winning the crown with a Game 2 win will be a tough one since Cordova, Joshua Alminar and Romnick Jover will not suit up after receiving yellow cards in the match earning them automatic suspension. "Although we win today, we lost a lot in this game," said Alicante, referring to his three suspended players who received two yellow cards each during the exhausting 90-minute championship game. We need to give our all on Sunday."
FEU is looking to regain its title which it won in 2008. Elimination round leader Santo Tomas U, with an unbeaten slate with 8-0-2, is aiming to bring the football crown that it last won in 2007. UST reversed its fortunes in the women’s division after reigning titlists Tigresses romped to a 2-0 win over La Salle Lady Archers.
The Lady Archers earned the twice-to-beat advantage after topping the elimination round. Sophomore striker Marianne Narciso scored early in the game when she booted a goal in the three-minute mark of the first half. La Salle tried to tie the count a number of times but was foiled by the UST defense and Narciso sealed the win for the Tigresses with another goal in the 81st minute.
"Puso ang nagpanalo sa team. Malaking bagay din na wala yung kanilang goal keeper (Our team the heart to win. The fact that their starting goal keeper didn’t play also affected their game)," said UST coach Rozano Estraban.
Estraban was referring to the Lady Archers goal keeper Hyacinth Ibarra, who suffered an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury after the double round eliminations. Narciso’s two goals are also her 11th and 12th in the league making her the top candidate for the best scorer and best striker awards.
Host Ateneo De Manila U moved one-game closer in clinching the junior’s title after defeating FEU, 4-3, in Game 1 of their best-of-three finals series. Game 2 of the championship series in the three divisions will be played on Sunday.
San Beda, Letran netters reign supreme
Feb 16th
San Beda and Letran flexed their muscle in different fronts by topping their respective events Sunday in the 85th NCAA table tennis and lawn tennis competitions at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Gym and Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, respectively.
The Kurt de Guzman-mentored Lions drew strength from eventual MVP Japheth Adasa in edging last year’s titlist College St. Benilde to rule men’s table tennis.
Making it a double celebration for the Mendiola-based school, high school MVP Karl Angelo Bolado paced the Cubs to the juniors crown over San Sebastian to complete a back-to-back romp.
St. Benilde didn’t go home empty-handed, though, as the Lady Blazers dominated the women’s side for the fifth straight season.
Emerging as the lawn tennis title holders this year were the Letran Knights, who dethroned previous champ CSB Blazers, 2-1.
Dave Regencio teamed up with Elnathan Abella in trouncing Larry Antigua and Daniel Bautista, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, and then turned back a well-rested Martin Ramos in the deciding singles duel, 6-3. 7-6 (5), to eke out the come-from-behind win for Letran.
CSB actually took the initiative early after Bautista walloped Keff Gamano in the first singles match, 6-3, 6-4.
San Beda, which also ruled demonstration sport soft tennis, continued its juggernaut as it ruled the high school division by smashing last year’s winner CSB, 2-1.
Perpetual Help and San Sebastian finished third and fourth, respectively, in the seniors’ section while San Sebastian and Letran ended up third and fourth, respectively, in the juniors’ class.
